Never hold a kicker
Keeping an ace alongside a low pair is the most common and most expensive amateur habit in the game. Hold the pair. Strategy charts exist precisely because intuition is wrong here in a consistent, measurable direction.
A lot of the payout is in one rare hand
A big chunk of what the game pays back is tied up in the royal flush, which turns up about once in 40,000 hands. Until you hit one, the game will feel meaner than the advertised return — that is normal, not a rigged machine.
Quick check. Read the full-house and flush rows of the paytable before your first hand. Those two rows move the return more than anything else and are how a machine is quietly downgraded.
Fair odds are not a winning system. Taking the casino’s advantage away does not hand you one. The best any of these games does is break even over time, and a bad night can still take everything you brought. Decide what you are willing to lose before you open the game, not halfway through it.
